Education: Building Brighter Futures
At Children Relief Service (CRS), we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and build a better future. We work with vulnerable children and young people in refugee and host communities to improve access to education and learning opportunities. Through literacy support, English language learning, educational resources, academic support, and community-based activities, we help children develop the knowledge, confidence, and skills they need to reach their potential.
Why Education Matters in Dzaleka Refugee Camp
Education remains one of the greatest needs for children and young people in Dzaleka Refugee Camp. With the reduction of services from UNHCR and its implementing partners, many children and youth have limited access to education and learning support.
Many school-aged children in the camp have started school late or have been unable to continue their education because their families cannot afford school-related costs. For the few schools providing free education where vulnerable children can enroll, the available spaces are very limited because of overcrowding and the growing number of children seeking admission.
For many children, this means spending important years out of school or learning in overcrowded classrooms with limited resources. At CRS, we believe that a child’s future should not be determined by whether their family can afford school fees or whether there is enough space in a classroom. We are committed to helping create more opportunities for children and young people to learn, develop their abilities, and build a better future.
What We Do
Primary School Support
We work with primary schools to improve learning environments and create better educational opportunities for children. Support is based on the needs identified within schools and communities and the resources available to respond to those needs.
Example: Supporting schools with learning activities, educational materials, and other resources that help teachers and students.
English as a Foreign Language:
At CRS, we help children and young people develop practical English language skills because English can be an important bridge to education, community participation, and employment opportunities.
Example: Supporting learners with speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and everyday English communication
Literacy and Learning Support
At CRS, we help children strengthen basic reading, writing, numeracy, and other important learning skills. We focus on building strong foundations that can help children become more confident learners and progress in their education.
Example: Organizing additional literacy activities for children who need extra support with reading and writing.
Educational Resources
Access to appropriate learning materials is important for effective education. We support children, teachers, and schools with educational resources whenever we have the capacity to respond to identified needs and help create better conditions for teaching and learning.
Example: Providing books, stationery, learning materials, and other resources that support teaching and learning.
Academic Support
At CRS, we provide additional learning support to children who may be struggling with their studies or need extra guidance. We help learners strengthen their understanding, build confidence, and develop better study habits that can support their academic progress.
Example: Organizing additional learning sessions for children needing help with challenging subjects or topics.
Community-Based Learning
Learning opportunities are brought closer to children and young people through activities within the community. This approach helps reach learners who face barriers to formal education while providing a safe and supportive environment where they can continue developing their skills.
Example: Organizing community learning sessions where children can practice skills and receive educational guidance.
Who We Support
Our education work focuses on children and young people who face barriers to accessing quality learning opportunities. We especially support learners from vulnerable refugee and host community families who may be affected by poverty, displacement, limited resources, or language barriers.

We help children and young people develop knowledge, language skills, confidence, and practical abilities that support their education, personal development, and future opportunities.
INCLUSIVE AND CHILD-FOCUSED
We focus on ensuring vulnerable children and young people are not left behind because of poverty, displacement, language barriers, or other challenges affecting their access to education.
WORKING WITH SCHOOLS
We collaborate with schools and teachers to strengthen learning environments, support educational activities, and build local capacity to better respond to learners’ needs.
PARTNERSHIP AND COLLABORATION
We work with organizations, institutions, education stakeholders, and community structures to share knowledge, strengthen capacity, coordinate efforts, and expand opportunities for learners.

We aim to create lasting education opportunities by strengthening local capacity, encouraging collaboration, and connecting learners with pathways toward further education and employment.

| SKILLS CREATING LIVELIHOOD OPPORTUNITIES Through our vocational training programmes, our alumni have gained practical skills in areas such as tailoring, hairdressing, soap making, makeup, and other income-generating activities, enabling many to work, earn income, and support their livelihoods. |
Education can change the direction of a child’s life. Through our work, we have seen children and young people gain confidence, develop new skills, return to learning, and become more active in their communities.
One of the areas we are particularly proud of is our English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Bridging Programme. Through this programme, more than 1,200 students have successfully progressed into formal education, including public primary schools, secondary schools, and universities.
The impact goes beyond education. A good number of learners who developed strong English language skills through the programme have also been able to access employment and other opportunities in different areas, including teaching, interpreting, and doing small business. By reducing the language barrier, the programme has helped young people communicate more confidently, participate in different activities, and pursue opportunities that may otherwise have been difficult to access.
Our wider education activities have also contributed to reducing school dropouts in different schools by providing additional learning support, strengthening literacy and language skills, and helping vulnerable learners remain engaged with their education.

Help a Child Access Education
Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and build a better future. In Dzaleka Refugee Camp and surrounding communities, many children and young people still face barriers that make it difficult to access consistent education and learning opportunities.
